Kiel Ortega

Research Associate III

Kiel’s research primarily focuses radar-based methods for severe storm diagnosis and related hazard detection. Recently, Kiel has started applying machine learning techniques to his research. Kiel also creates large data sets and derivatives for use in research, the primary example being the MYRORSS data set, which is a MRMS-based data set being produced for the entirety of the WSR-88D archive. Finally, Kiel assists field programs (primarily as a mobile mesonet operator), helps conduct tornado/wind damage surveys, and participates on the ASCE / SEI / AMS Tornado Wind Speed Estimation Committee.
