Igor Ivic

Research Scientist

Dr. Ivic’ research interest is in weather radar signal processing, advancements of polarimetric radar measurements, applications of agile beam phased array radar for weather observations and development of algorithms for the U.S. NEXRAD national network of weather radars (WSR-88D). He developed the novel Radial Based Noise Estimation (RBNE) technique to estimate noise power in radars at every antenna position in parallel with data collection. The technique is in the operational use on the U.S. NEXRAD and U.K. Met Office network of weather radars. Dr. Ivic also developed the novel Coherency Based Detection (CBT) technique to improve detection of signals on weather radars which is in the operational use on the NEXRAD network. He conducted theoretical as well as simulation evaluation of the pulse-to-pulse phase coding technique and provided experimental verification. The purpose of this technique is to mitigate the cross coupling in polarimetric phased array radar (PPAR) which is essential for polarimetric radar measurements. Dr. Ivic received the Outstanding Scientific Paper Award from the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, US Department of Commerce in 2005.
