If he were to write his autobiography, the title of the book might be “From Gaucho to Cowboy”. Sebastian Torres grew up  in Argentina, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in his native country. In 1997, he came to the University of Oklahoma, where he attained a Master’s degree in the same field. Opportunity came knocking when he was offered a position with OU’s Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies. Now at home in Oklahoma, he even went on to earn his PhD in Electrical Engineering from OU in 2002. His work with CIMMS has supported NSSL for the past 18 years!

Currently, Sebastian is the Radar Research and Development Division/Advanced Radar Techniques team leader and CIMMS assistant director. He uses his engineering skills to develop techniques that improve radar data quality for National Weather Service forecasters. He also helps to design and evaluate weather radar of the future. He is heavily involved in researching Multi-Function Phased Array Radar with the National Radar Weather Testbed, exploring the possibilities of simultaneous aircraft tracking, wind profiling, and weather surveillance.
