The University of Oklahoma Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies is proud to announce the American Meteorological Society named an OU CIMMS senior research scientist during a recent release of awards.

Alexander Ryzhkov was one of more than 30 individuals recognized by AMS during a recent announcement of 2018 award winners and fellows. Ryzhkov was awarded the prestigious honor of AMS fellow.

To be considered a fellow, one must have made outstanding contributions to science during a substantial period of years. One must be nominated to be a fellow and the approval of the AMS Council is required. Fellows are elected each year by the AMS Council.

Ryzhkov has worked at OU CIMMS for more than 20 years and works closely with NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory researchers. His  primary research goals are developing operational algorithms for quantitative precipitation estimation, hydrometeor classification, and microphysical retrievals using polarimetric radars, and utilizing polarimetric radars for the improvement of Numerical Weather Prediction model performance.

He received his PhD in Radio Science and his Masters in Physics.from St. Petersburg University.

Ryzhkov is in the company of other AMS fellows like NSSL Director Steve Koch, NSSL researchers Harold Brooks, Don Burgess and Dusan Zrnic and National Weather Service Director and Assistant Administrator for Weather Services Louis Uccellini.
