Monday, May 9 2016 begins the first week of the three-week Probabilistic Hazards Information – Prototype Experiment and the final week of the four-week GOES-R / JPSS Spring Experiment for the Experimental Warning Program in the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) at the National Weather Center in Norman, OK.
The Probabilistic Hazards Information – Prototype Experiment will test a web-based tool for the creation of probabilistic forecasts of severe convective hazards. The experiment will have two emphases. The first will be testing new object-based automated probabilistic guidance (e.g., ProbSevere, MYRORSS, Warn-on-Forecast). The second will be the development, testing, and refinement of communication protocols. These protocols are intended to support greater efficacy in communication between forecasters and emergency managers.
The GOES-R / JPSS Spring Experiment continues to focus on two components: a) an evaluation of multiple CONUS GOES-R convective applications, including satellite and lightning; and b) a real-time evaluation of the JPSS products suite. Scientists will also be evaluating the Experimental Forecast Program’s probabilistic severe weather outlooks as guidance for warning operations.
During the week of May 9-13, distinguished NWS guests will be James Auten (WFO Lincoln, IL), Faith Borden (WFO Charleston, WV), Ryan Ellis (WFO Raleigh, NC), Michael Fowle (WFO Des Moines, IA), Jeremiah Pyle (WFO Portland, OR), and Tom Wasula (WFO Albany, NY). Additionally, Raphael Miranda of WNBC (New York City, NY) will join as a participant on the GOES-R / JPSS Experiment. Travel stipends for participants have been provided by the GOES-R program office, the JPSS program office, and the U.S. Weather Research Program.

Bill Line (SPC/CIMMS) will be the weekly coordinator for the GOES-R / JPSS Experiment. Michael Bowlan (WDTD/CIMMS) will be the “Tales from the Testbed” Webinar facilitator.
