Outstanding Service Award

I have been chosen as the winner of the 2016 OU College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service. This annual award recognizes an exceptional accomplishment in service (well beyond that expected in normal duties) in the previous calendar year. For the purposes of this award, “service” is taken to be activities or duties performed by a member of the faculty or staff that advance the interests and/or increase the capabilities of the individual’s unit, the College, the University, or the State of Oklahoma, and may include outreach, extension, and economic development activities.

Here is the citation: "Dr. Torres is recognized for his accomplishments in serving as the CIMMS Assistant Director for NOAA Relations.  He assumed this responsibility in January of 2015 in addition to his scientific, engineering, and team leadership responsibilities at NSSL and ARRC.  Dr. Torres is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering.  As CIMMS Assistant Director, he developed new guidelines for the standardization of performance evaluations of CIMMS employees at NSSL.  He also reviewed career tracks at other NOAA Cooperative Institutes to assist CIMMS management in developing career track plans for CIMMS staff.  Dr. Torres serves as the Team Lead for five CIMMS electrical and software engineers in the NSSL/Advanced Radar Techniques (ART) team.  This team supports activities associated with two critical projects of NSSL:  The Multifunction Phased Array Radar (MPAR) Program and the NEXRAD Radar Product Improvement (RPI) Program.  Dr. Torres also serves as technical lead for the MPAR Advanced Technology Demonstrator (ATD) Application Software Team.  The ATD development is slated to be the most expensive, most advanced, and greatest engineering challenge NSSL and its partners have attempted to date.  Dr. Torres’ efforts play a large part in sustaining the critical partnership between OU and NOAA, a relationship that is vital to advancing meteorological research and development that directly benefits our weather community and the Nation.  Dr. Torres’ willingness to assume these many responsibilities along with his exceptional leadership and scientific/engineering contributions make him the top choice for the 2016 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service."
