The 2nd International Symposium on Earth-science Challenges (ISEC) was co-convened by Dr. Berrien Moore and Dr. Toshiyuki Awaji. This 3-day event was held at the National Weather Center on September 14-16, 2011.

This biannual event has the important goal of bringing together scientists and students from Kyoto University and the University of Oklahoma to enrich the long-standing and deep relationship between these institutions.

General areas of interest at the symposium were:

  • Earth system science: atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere
  • Radar and satellite remote sensing of the atmosphere
  • Hydrometeorology and the water cycle
  • Modeling and data assimilation
  • Weather and climate variability

The 2nd ISEC was structured around a series of oral and poster scientific presentations. In addition, we planned several tours of our facilities, our radars, and our campus. As equally important, there was plenty of time for informal discussions and networking during lunches, coffee breaks, and social events.

If you want to know how I was recruited to head the organization of this important event at the National Weather Center, read this story.
